My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris

My favorite Thing is Monsters is a graphic book, specifically a Fantagraphic Books, looks like if it's been directly drawn on to a journal book. It talks about a young girl Karen in a rough 1960s Chicago neighborhood, who is obsessed with monsters and synthesia. One day, her neighbor upstairs Mrs.Anka was found dead and she decided to become a detective and find the cause of death.

In the novel, "Karen" is the one who illustrates the story, and she portrays herself as a werewolf which may not be visually attractive but quite interesting as a portray, it shows her characteristics of obsession towards the monsters. The way she drives the story visually is quite attractive as a form, because most graphic novels are drawn in square boxes, in order, and regular. However, this novel has very characteristic drawings yet fine but gory style at the same time. Personally, the visual of this book really creeped me out because it is so realistic and the choice of color pen, drawn in blue depicts dead human body draws out my inner fear.

Not only the visual but the combination of unfiltered subject such death, monster, sexual and dark idea is what makes this novel attractive. This story may be told by a "young girl", but it is fresh because the one who drives the story is her. The way she understands and interpret as being a detective is different from what we would see, and I feel like this is what dragged out my inner fear because the way Karen looks at those subject is more of curiosity and innocent, unlike adult who understands those fear.
